Derek
Nelson
Born and raised in the Tri-Cities, Derek Nelson is a Kennewick High School graduate and Washington State University alum who actively leads the marketing and communications aspects of the Arts Foundation of Mid-Columbia. Derek draws heavily from his experience as a creative director and partner at Focal Point – a marketing agency focused on creative projects – that sees him working on a variety of deliverables that range from brand development to websites, videos, motion graphics and beyond.
As a board member, Derek seeks to help elevate AFMC’s brand by strengthening our visibility and helping the community and collaborators understand the value we have to offer. He’s an active member of helping AFMC to raise funds, as well as to promote and sponsor events.
While not a self-professed artist, Derek has a wealth of experience in visual communications and studied fine art as part of his undergrad education. Further, he has a background in music as a hobbyist that dates back to his teenage years that includes collaborating in several musical endeavors in that time. Overall, Derek considers himself a patron and supporter of the arts, who seeks his participation in AFMC as an opportunity to inspire and educate the next generation of artists in our community, while making a profound cultural impact on our region.
